Term 5 2018-19

Our learning this term

We have had a great term in nursery! Our topic this term was ‘Terrific Transport’.

We learnt what transport is, what transport is used for and the different types of transport there are. We shared our experiences of transport we have been on and journeys that we can remember going on. We sorted transport methods into whether they travel on land, air or water.

We shared lots of non-fiction books about transport, as well as stories including ‘The train ride.’

In our airport role play area we pretended to buy tickets for flights, check in our baggage putting it through our x-ray machine and relaxed in the airport lounge, before having our passports checked and getting onto the plane!

We enjoyed looking at our large world map, pointing out where we have travelled to and telling our friends which of our family members live in different countries.

We were able to spend time looking at a real car as one of the teachers drove their car in to nursery! We sat in the driver’s seat, learnt what the different parts of cars do and looked at the engine.

In the garden, our role play area changed into a mechanics garage with its own car wash! Lots of the children were motivated to get writing by pretending to work in the office of the garage, writing tickets for the car wash and taking telephone messages to book cars in to be fixed!

In our large construction area we used our crates as boats and made our own flags. The children enjoyed making trains.

Next term our topic will be ‘Our Wonderful World’ where we will engage in a variety of activities to help us learn about the weather, insects and plants. We will be sharing the stories ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘Jaspers Beanstalk’ and ‘The Enormous Turnip.’ We will also have some real life caterpillars in the nursery classroom so that the children can closely observe the life cycle from caterpillar to butterfly.

In July, we will be going on a trip to Christchurch Meadows for a picnic and play. Please read your newsletter for more information.
