Term 5 2018-19
Our learning this term
Year 1 have had a fantastic term. The children really are going from strength to strength and we could not be more proud of the progress they are making.
It has been a short term but a very busy one too – what a lot of learning the children have done! In English we have been looking at “Window” by Jeannie Baker. The children had fun drawing views from their own windows and identifying nouns, verbs and adjectives. The sentences that they were able to write were excellent! We have also had a re-cap of our work on instruction writing and we were amazed at what the children remembered. They all wrote a set of instructions for how to stay safe in the sun, remembering their title, subheading, method and of course, their bossy verbs! You might like to encourage your child to write a set of instructions over the holidays.
In Maths we have continued with our work on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as a recap of shapes and repeating patterns. Over the holidays, keep practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s as well as number bonds to 20. This forms the foundation to more complex mathematical problems and will stand the children in good stead for their final term in Year 1.
The children have loved our Topic for this term - Super Safety. They were particularly interested in the History of Reading and a real highlight of this term was our trip to the town centre. The Museum fascinated the children and they thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the library too. It was lovely seeing the children linking their Topic learning to what they saw throughout the day.
We are looking forward to continuing our learning journey in term 6. Our new topic will be Sunny Sahara and we will be enjoying a school trip to Beale Park on Wednesday 19th June. If you are able to volunteer on the trip, your child’s teacher would love to hear from you!
