Term 2 2020-21
Our learning this term
This term in English, year three have enjoyed the exciting story of The Firework Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman. Through this text, we have explored many writing genres including: poetry about fireworks; letter writing to persuade; and finally writing our own version of this defeating a monster tale. The children truly wowed the teachers with their exciting new tales and proudly published them. We are extremely proud of our writing and would love for you to ask about how we wrote it!
This term, we have been working very hard as we continue to expand our knowledge of written methods for the four operations. This term in particular, we have started to look at short multiplication and the ‘bus stop’ method for division. The children have understood the significance of learning their timestables well and how this helps them to carry out multiplication and division operations more efficiently. We continue to revise our basic calculations in our daily super 6 as well as revising our 2s, 5s, 10s and 3 timestables and started learning our 4s. We are excited to start looking at the 8 timestable next term.
Throughout the term we have been doing lots of reading and using a range of skills to answer questions about a text. We have applied each of the reading vipers (vocabulary, inference, prediction, explain, retrieve and summarise) to our core text, The Firework Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman. It is important that we remember to read at least 5 times a week to an adult! This is also a great opportunity to practise those reading vipers!
In science, we have been learning all about dark and light. We have had a great time conducting scientific experiments to identify the difference between objects that are transparent, translucent and opaque. As well as this, we have also been looking at what kind of objects form shadows and made an interesting discovery. Later in the term we got to make our own shadow puppets and enjoyed creating our own shadow puppet shows.
For our topic climate and weather, we learnt about the different types of Biomes that are found around the world as well as identifying the different fauna and flora you may find there. We then got the opportunity to write fact files as well as creating our own quizzes.
We had fun practicing our Christmas songs and videoing them – we hope you enjoy watching them! We also made Christmas cards for a local care home and wrote messages inside.
