Term 2 2020-21

Term 2 2020-21

Our learning this term

What a wonderful and busy term we have had in term 2! We are so proud of the children and the progress they are making.

In English we started the term with the story of Beegu. The children worked hard to learn the story before writing their own innovated version with new characters and a different setting. We were amazed by their work! The children are working so hard to remember their capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and it is lovely to see them challenging themselves to include conjunctions too! At the start of the term we sent home a list of all the year 1 Common Exception words and we are delighted to see the children using and spelling them correctly. We have also been working on using the suffixes -ed and -ing as well as writing recounts of our school day.

We have really been challenging the children in maths with missing number calculations, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, solid shapes and measurement work. These are all new concepts for the children and they are always so keen and eager to do their best. The children have logons to Education City and Purple Mash in their reading records and homework books. These have excellent interactive games and resources which can help your child to apply their learning at home.

Our topic for this term has been all about People and their Communities. The children have enjoyed taking exciting journeys to different parts of the world including the Amazon, Timbuktu, Sydney and New York. They have found out what life is like in the rainforest, the coast, the desert and the city and how different these places are from each other. The children have learnt to name and locate the world’s seven continents as well learning about the human and physical geography of these areas.

We have also learnt about different celebrations including Divali and Christmas. The children enjoyed learning the Divali story and making rangoli patterns.  In science the children have learnt about their senses and how they use these when celebrating.  We learnt about opaque, translucent and transparent materials and made shadow puppets.

We hope you have a relaxing holiday and we look forward to continuing our learning journey with the children next term.
