Term 2 2017-18
Our learning this term
Year One’s learning this term has been out of this world! Something very strange happened at the start of term – we found what looked like a crash-landing site on the playing field! We thought it might have been an alien crash-landing and we enjoyed looking at the debris and thinking about what each object might be. We then spent a very happy afternoon working in teams to make spacecraft – some of them were huge!
In Topic we learnt all about the moon and Neil Armstrong’s journey to it. We have also looked at lots of different materials and their properties, created and debugged algorithms, made model rockets and are now learning all about the Christmas story.
In English we learnt the story ‘Beegu’ and practised retelling and writing the whole story. We also looked at some spelling rules, including when to use ‘y’ at the end of a word and spelling the suffixes ‘ing’ and ‘ed’. We are continuing to practise using our sounds, finger spaces, capital letters and full stops and are getting pretty good at it now!
This term in Maths we have practised lots of basic skills such as counting forwards and backwards and adding and subtracting. We have also learnt to name and describe some 2D and 3D shapes. We are now learning our number bonds to 20 and it would be great if you could practise these at home, too!
Year One have also worked very hard on our Growth Mindsets this term. This means persevering when we find things difficult and celebrating our mistakes! Everyone is becoming much more resilient and our brains are stretching more and more every day.
